Jogashima 城ヶ島

Jogashima, 城ヶ島 (literally translated as “Castle Island”) is a natural island at the southernmost tip of Miura Peninsula, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is relatively sheltered; nestled in Sagami Bay between the much longer Boso peninsula to the east, and Izu peninsula to the west. In 1959, it was finally connected to the mainland by a bridge, which was the longest in Asia until 1963. Since the bridge’s construction, the one-kilometer-square island has seen its population increase to about 600 residents. Allegedly, the island has been called “Yogashima” or “Jogashima” since ancient times, and is a designated natural monument of Kanagawa Prefecture..
